Jodi Murphy has credentials unmatched in the grooming world. She is a Master Pet Stylist, a NCMG (National Certified Master Groomer) through The National Dog Groomers Association of America, a MPS Meritus (Master Pet Stylist Meritus) through the International Society of Canine Cosmetology.
She earned the World Grand Champion title at the Oster Invitational Tournament of Champions in 2006, besting 42 of the top groomers from around the world. She has been named to Groom Team USA four times.
Murphy has developed a catalog of instructional videos primarily for professional groomers, though I found the information accessible even as a pet owner.
Besides being both an artist and technician, Murphy is a good communicator and on her Havanese DVD clearly explains what she’s doing and why.
On the 80 minute DVD Murphy teaches the viewer two separate pet cuts; a longer natural trim done with both normal and thinning shears, and a shorter puppy cut type trim done with an electric trimmer with snap-on combs, thinning shears, and scissors.
The dog, a male named Ashton, is groomed on a rotating table so that the techniques being taught are done so in clear view of the camera. Murphy wears a wireless microphone and both the audio and video quality are good. Murphy is gentle with the Hav and her commitment to her craft is evident by watching her work.
You needn’t fear that generic grooming techniques are being applied to the dog in this video. Murphy amply demonstrates her knowledge of the breed standard, the breed’s history, the unique qualities of the Havanese
coat and the challenges represented, and the level of brushing and combing necessary to maintain the longer coat shown. Indeed the shorter cut is taught as an alternative for those that choose less than daily maintenance.
If you’re looking for more evidence that Ms. Murphy can teach, look no further than the fact that her daughter Mackensie is currently ranked second in the country and has been nominated for the 2014 American Groomer of the Year.
I believe that by watching this $34.95 instructional video the committed Havanese owner with the proper tools could learn to home groom their own dog and enjoy the satisfaction and cost savings that comes with it.
